Team Curtin named runner-up champions at Inter College Environmental Public Speaking Competition

Curtin Dubai’s School of Engineering students won the first runner up award at the prestigious 18th Annual Inter College Environmental Public Speaking Competition organised by Emirates Environmental Group.

The students presented their research project titled, ‘Development of Twin Pit Latrine System for Kratie Province of Cambodia’ under the theme of ‘Sustainable Built Environment: Are We Achieving It?’

Industry expert and Head of School, Curtin Dubai’s School of Engineering Dr Pon Selvan said, “Thanks to Emirates Environmental Group for providing opportunities for Curtin Dubai Engineering students with a platform to express their opinion on contemporary environmental and sustainability issues and to propose innovative solutions for making a positive change. The Twin Pit Latrine System proposed by our students for 2018 EWB (Engineers Without Borders) Challenge program is an affordable latrine option that would be both feasible and desirable for members of the Kratie Province of Cambodia to help solve sanitation and hygiene issues.”

Curtin Dubai student, Sharjeel Ahmed Shakilzada who’s currently pursuing Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering said, “The EEG public speaking competition proved to be very inspiring, it motivated me to improve my public speaking. Every student who participated had something I could learn from. It was an energetic competition with excitement and culture till the very end. I would like to thank Curtin University Dubai for providing me this wonderful opportunity.”

More than 25 universities from the UAE, Oman and Saudi Arabia participated in the competition and Curtin Dubai students won the first runner-up award through sheer hard work under the mentorship of Dr Pon Selvan.

The Emirates Environment Group Inter College Environmental Public Speaking Competition provides students a platform to creatively showcase their public speaking skills, express their opinion on environmental and sustainability issues, and propose innovative solutions for making a positive change.
